College Democrats of New Jersey Statement on Terry Endorsement Of Bob Hugin

PRESS RELEASE

NEW BRUNSWICK – One needs only to glance at Demetrius Terry’s social media accounts to know that he is one of the most self-serving, morally bankrupt people in New Jersey politics. He has no firm policy beliefs – he believes only in doing what he thinks will get him the most publicity. Let us not forget that Demetrius Terry was a Republican until he was nineteen-years-old. He even served as Chairman of the New Jersey Hudson County Teenage Republicans for six years. Terry becoming a Democrat was a purely politically expedient decision.

Terry claims to be a “proud progressive Democrat,” yet he opposed New Jersey’s budget for FY 2019, one of the most progressive ones this nation has ever seen. He opposed Governor Murphy’s proposal for a millionaire’s tax, a key progressive policy. Additionally, he opposed key progressive items in Senate President Sweeney’s budget, including the corporate business tax and fair school funding reform. Terry claims to support a $15 minimum wage, legalization of marijuana, and Medicare for All, yet is endorsing a candidate who is firmly against all of these policies. Any self-respecting Democrat, let alone any progressive Democrat, would not endorse a Donald Trump rubber stamp in any election, let alone one this consequential.

Furthermore, Terry has a record of never following through on anything. For months, he has been making posts about running for State Assembly in Legislative District 31, but when pressed about if he is running or not, he gives flippant responses. He has run for the Jersey City Board of Education twice, only to withdraw days after announcing.

Demetrius Terry is a complete embarrassment to Democrats – both in New Jersey and nationwide. We are more than happy to let Republicans have him.

“Demetrius Terry frequently likes to boast about his tenure as Executive Vice President of the College Democrats of New Jersey. First, there is no such position – we only have a Vice President. Second, it is no secret to anyone involved in New Jersey Democratic politics that the College Democrats of New Jersey were regarded as a joke under his leadership. He did infinitely more harm than good to the organization and continues to do so to this day. In fact, nearly every member of our Executive Board, myself included, cites Terry’s ineffective and embarrassing ‘leadership’ as one of the reasons they joined CDNJ in the first place – to save it from the shame he brought to our party,” said College Democrats of New Jersey President Megan Coyne.

“The only places that Demetrius Terry is a Democratic leader in are in his own mind and his Facebook page. Everyone in Democratic politics that has worked with Demetrius knows that the only matter he is a leading voice on is self-promotion above all. I can only laugh at Demetrius’s “enthusiastic” support for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Medicare for All while simultaneously endorsing a man who made $33 million dollars a year by bankrupting cancer patients and their struggling families,” said College Democrats of New Jersey Vice President Michael Zhadanovsky.

“To say that Demetrius is a leader would mean he actually participated in our political process and made meaningful contributions to our party, rather than just constantly instigate problems.” said College Democrats of New Jersey Northern Regional Chair and Jersey City Resident, Awilda Diaz
