Complete George: Wayne Township becomes 59th NJ municipality to call for wider GWB paths
Wayne Township becomes 59th NJ municipality to call for wider GWB paths. Wayne joins Westchester County, NY and Bronx Community Board #9.
Wayne Township becomes the 59th municipality to call on the Port Authority to widen the paths on the George Washington Bridge.
Given that the width of the bridge’s sidewalks do not meet federal standards for high-use pedestrian and bicycle paths, the planned renovation project presents an unique opportunity to build sidewalks that would safely accommodate the increasing number of pedestrians and bicyclists expected to use the George Washington Bridge in the decades to come.
Underscoring the breadth of bi-state support, Wayne joins Westchester County, NY (950K residents)
Widening these paths would accompany the investments that New York has already made in cycling infrastructure, both on the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge and the Empire State Trail. This would create a 42 mile loop, which would bring cyclists past part of Westchester and hopefully encourage more business at some of our local establishments.
Also, Bronx Community Board #9 (172K residents)
We believe that wider GWB paths will spur the development of connected infrastructure over the Harlem River and across the Bronx’s “transportation deserts”. This will provide residents with opportunities for exercise and recreation, while enhancing public health, affordability, access to jobs, tourism and sustainability.
Complete George is an ad hoc coalition of 230 organizations, businesses and communities calling on the PA to widen the bicycle-pedestrian paths on the George Washington Bridge to comply with national standards as part of the upcoming $1.9 billion restoration.
