Congressman Kim Calls for Additional Aid to New Jersey in Next Relief Package

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) called on House and Senate leadership to come together and bring to the House floor a Coronavirus relief package that prioritizes preventing massive cuts to public services, first responders and teachers.

“The people of Burlington and Ocean Counties are about to face the impact of two massive failures: the failure of the Administration in enacting a national plan to end the pandemic, and the failure of the Senate to help our state and townships weather the storm,” said Congressman Kim. “By not investing in a robust national testing strategy, we’ve seen too many lives lost, too many small businesses shuttered, and our neighbors unable to safely go back to work or school. By delaying getting much needed aid to our state and townships, we can see massive cuts at home. Teachers, police and fire fighters, garbage pickup and street maintenance are all at risk of being slashed because of the Senate’s inaction. Every day we wait is a day our seniors and working families are going to feel the impact. We need to put a bill on the President’s desk immediately and give New Jersey’s families the security and certainty they deserve.”

In May, Congressman Kim voted to pass the Heroes Act, which would deliver more than an estimated $27.95 billion in direct aid to the state of New Jersey and our local municipalities.  Of that, more than an estimated $612 million would go to local governments in New Jersey’s Third District.

In enacted, the Heroes Act would have provided more than $341 million to Ocean County and more than $250 million to Burlington County. In addition, every municipality in the Third District would be eligible to receive funds to help offset revenue losses from the Coronavirus crisis. For example, Toms River would receive more than $29 million, Evesham more than $22 million, Willingboro more than $15 million, Lacey more than $14 million, Shamong more than $3 million and Mount Laurel more than $20 million.
