Congressman Kim Statement on Passage of War Powers Resolution

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Andy Kim (NJ-03) voted to pass H.Con.Res. 83, a Concurrent Resolution that requires the President seek public approval for further action against Iran:

“There is a reason why our Founding Fathers gave Congress the sole responsibility to declare war. These decisions impact the men and women serving at our Joint Base, their families and our community. The American people should have a voice in these debates; they deserve to be heard.

This Concurrent Resolution is the first step in a critical discussion about our military presence in the Middle East. I look forward to engaging with my colleagues and finding solutions to make our country safer and more secure.”

H.Con.Res. 83 would not prevent our military from acting in America’s self-defense, but would require Congressional approval for further proactive military action against Iran. The resolution would also not impact other counter-terror activities in the Middle East that were authorized through the 2001 Authorization of Use of Military Force.

This vote comes as the United States was pushed to the brink of war with Iran. Congressman Kim has called on the Trump Administration to present a strategic plan to the American people that ensures American interests are protected and American personnel in the region are secure.

Congressman Kim is a member of the House Armed Services Committee, where he serves the Vice Chair of the Subcommittee on Readiness and as a Member of the Subcommittee on Intelligence and Emerging Threats and Capabilities. Prior to serving in Congress, Congressman Kim served in Afghanistan as Strategic Advisor to Generals David Petraeus and John Allen. Kim went on to serve as Director of Iraq in Obama’s National Security Council where he coordinated the crisis response to countering the rise of ISIS.
