Congressman Sires Attends Event Supporting the Portal Bridge Project
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Representative Albio Sires (D-NJ)joined New Jersey State officials and colleagues from the House of Representatives to speak on the importance of the Portal Bridge Project, and why the Trump Administration needs to help New Jersey move it forward.
“We have been here before – the Portal Bridge is important to New Jersey, New York, and the entire northeast region of this country. It is also one-hundred-year-old infrastructure that sometimes has to be set into place by workmen with sledgehammers,” said Representative Sires. “It is embarrassing to our state and a testament to the country’s infrastructure headaches that a bridge which carries over 450 trains each day is in such disrepair. If the bridge is ever forced to close for emergency repairs, 150,000 daily commuters would have to find a different way in and out of New York. That would be a catastrophe.”
Although the Portal Bridge Project is one hundred percent designed and permitted and New Jersey has committed $600 million to its share of the project, the Trump Administration has continuously denied the state’s commitment. This conclusion by the Administration has shut the Project out of the federal financial assistance, it needs to begin construction.
“New Jersey has done its part to get this project moving forward. Its time to stop playing games and get this bridge upgraded.”
