Congressman Sires’ Reaction to Mueller Statement

(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Sires released the following statement in response to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s public statement today on the Russia investigation and the Mueller report:

“As I have said time and again, Congress has the duty to responsibly protect our nation’s institutions, particularly those that comprise the foundation of American democracy. The integrity of our elections and our public office holders should be held in confidence by the American people. In light of Mr. Mueller’s report and public statement, it is important that Congress uphold its oversight mandate and pursue the truth through the swift completion of its investigations into the matters outlined in the Mueller report. Any decisions resulting from these investigations must stem from the facts that are uncovered.

What Congress and Americans should also focus on in this statement is that ‘there were multiple, systematic efforts to interfere in our election.’ I would like to echo Mr. Mueller’s sentiments that these allegations deserve every American’s attention and call upon my colleagues and the Administration to prioritize implementing the proper safeguards and protocols in place to keep our elections safe from foreign interference. Our elections are one of the hallmarks of our democracy and their security should be above partisan politics.”
