Corrado Bill Targeting Backlogs at MVC Advances

Legislation Would Make Written Portion of Driver’s Test Available Online During Pandemic

Legislation sponsored by Senator Kristin Corrado to help alleviate long delays at Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) locations during the pandemic was advanced today by the Senate Transportation Committee.

Corrado’s bill, S-3177, requires MVC to administer the written driver’s license knowledge examination online during the COVID public health emergency.

“The test should be available through a secure internet site under the control of the commission,” said Corrado (R-40). “Immediately, this would help allay backlogs at testing centers and reduce person-to-person contact during the pandemic. It is a safer, more efficient alternative to the traditional test process, and it can be done without compromising the safety of our roadways or new drivers.”

The legislation would also require MVC to allow an applicant for a special learner’s permit or examination permit to complete the written knowledge exam online.

“New Jersey residents are shopping online for groceries and gifts and using the internet to work remotely. There is no reason they shouldn’t be able to take their driver’s test the same way,” said Corrado. “This would be a temporary solution, and when the public health emergency is over, things will go back to normal.”
