Crime Continues to Decrease in Jersey City as Police Presence Expands with Continued Historic Staffing Levels as 50 New Police Officers Graduate – 84% of the new class Comprised of Minorities
What: Mayor Steven M. Fulop and Public Safety Director James Shea will swear in 50 new police officers graduating from two different academies, expanding the police department to 945 officers in total, with 50 additional recruits set to enter the academy this summer. The new class is comprised of 84% minorities, a more accurate reflection of Jersey City’s diverse population. Since 2013, the administration has grown the department from 769 police officers to the largest police department Jersey City has seen in decades. The administration has placed an emphasis on diversifying the ranks while enhancing public safety citywide. As a result of these ongoing efforts, crime has decreased nearly 70-percent in several major areas.
