DeBenedetto Calls on Fisher to Change Course and Do the Right Thing on Tonight’s Vote to Reaffirm Hoboken’s Pay-to-Play Laws
Nora Martinez Debenedetto, a candidate for Council in the 2ndWard, today called on her opponent, Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher to change course and vote at tonight’s Council meeting to reaffirm Hoboken’s pay-to-play and related campaign finance reform ordinances..
Pointing to Fisher’s move and vote to table the resolution sponsored by Councilmembers Doyle and Jabbour to support and reaffirm the pay-to-play regulations at the last regular Council meeting and her failure to attend a special Council meeting last week called to discuss and vote on the topic, Nora Martinez Debenedetto said, “ “The time for weak excuses and evasive tactics is over. It is not too late for Councilwoman Fisher to do the right thing and reaffirm her support for protecting the integrity of Hoboken’s elections. We must prevent large campaign contributions from influencing the selection of city professionals and the shape of redevelopment agreements in our hometown.”
DeBenedetto went on to say, “My campaign adheres to our local laws. It is time for Councilwoman Fisher to commit to do the same.”
DeBenedetto noted that whatever enforcement difficulties certain aspects of the law may create, that is not a good reason to refuse to commit to follow its provisions.
The resolution reaffirming the pay-to-play reform laws and related campaign finance regulations, introduced by Councilmembers Doyle and Jabbour was tabled by a 6-to-3 vote at the last regularly scheduled Council meeting and a Special Council meeting held last week failed to have a quorum with Councilwoman Fisher among the absentees.
