ESSEX COUNTY FREEHOLDERS

HONOR ST. PAUL BAPTIST CHURCH OF MONTCLAIR

(Newark, NJ) – During a special presentation at the Hall of Records on February 7, 2018, the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders honored St. Paul Baptist Church of Montclair in celebration of its 115th Church Anniversary.

During the presentation, Montclair native and President of the Board Freeholder At-Large Brendan W. Gill presented a Commendation to Senior Pastor Reverend Dr. Bernadette Glover on behalf of the church. President Gill went on to cite St. Paul as being a pivotal part of the Montclair community. Rev. Dr. Glover thanked the Board for the recognition and was joined by church members Elizabeth Cummings, Leroy Cody (Chair of the Trustee Board), and Marcus House, longtime members of the church who shared their experiences.

Since her installation as Senior Pastor in March 2016, Reverend Dr. Glover has continued to build an understanding of Christian discipleship in ministry, a notion that has been upheld by the church since its inception.

The church has developed specific ministries as community needs have evolved, including the Study to Excel Program (STEP) for afterschool care and Youth Education Aid Council (YEAC) ministry for assistance with post-secondary education. The church has led numerous initiatives, including a mission trip to Ghana to build homes and a water well for water-deprived villages, a mission trip Flint, Michigan, to distribute water and supplies as a result of the water crisis, and trips to areas affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Harvey.

In collaboration with other churches, St. Paul has developed interdenominational snow camps and provided youth with a forum to engage in projects directed at creating solutions to global problems, such as famine, malnutrition, and deprivation. The church has also worked to address problems associated with homelessness, care of seniors, and aiding the sick.

St. Paul Baptist Church continuously strives to spread the gospel, challenge believers to greater spiritual maturity, provide community-oriented service, and reach beyond the physical walls of the church to give hope and pursue social justice for all humanity.
