Breaking: Governor Murphy Opposes Meadowlands Gas Plant
In an interview published today at NJ Spotlight, Governor Phil Murphy revealed for the first time that he is opposed to the construction of a massive gas-fired power plant in the Meadowlands.
The project has galvanized Bergen County residents, elected officials and environmentalists across the state, who point out it would be the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in New Jersey.
Food & Water Watch senior organizer Matt Smith issued the following statement:
“If Governor Murphy approved this massive Meadowlands fracked gas power plant, it would essentially nullify his climate and clean energy goals, and add a major source of pollution in a community already dealing with poor air quality. Stopping this power plant is a step Murphy must take, and it’s not the only one. The clock is ticking for the administration to stop similar dirty and dangerous fossil fuel projects that are either proposed or moving forward, including the Southern Reliability Link pipeline through the Pinelands, the Williams Gateway Expansion project, and the NESE pipeline and compressor station in central Jersey. The climate crisis demands an urgent plan to get off fossil fuels, and that is why dozens of groups across New Jersey are demanding that Governor Murphy declare an emergency moratorium on all fossil fuel projects. Stopping this power plant must be an important step towards that goal.”
