Manville community rallies to help with Ida relief and recovery efforts, launches fundraisers

Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by the remnants of Hurricane Ida. Following the devastation in New Jersey, many families, businesses and community members have turned to GoFundMe for support with relief and recovery efforts.

Here are stories of Manville residents:

  • Stephanie and Anthony Koemple, their two small children and dog are left to pick up the pieces after losing their home and two cars due to the remnants of Hurricane Ida. The Koemples are in need of temporary housing as they rebuild their lives. Flood insurance will not cover all the damages. Their friends created this GoFundMe writing: “For those of you that don’t don’t personally know Stephanie, she is the most giving person I know. She is always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Even as she is dealing with the loss of her home, she has been offering baby items to those in town that need them.” In just one day the Manville community has raised more than $5,000.

  • After saving for 20 years to buy their first home, the Martinez family purchased that home nine months ago in Manville. It was all taken away from them in a matter of minutes after their home flooded as a result of  Hurricane Ida’s remnants. The family retreated to the second floor until Manville police rescued them. Insurance is not covering their flood damages costs. They are currently staying in a  hotel near their jobs, so they can walk to work since their cars are gone and their home is not inhabitable. https://www.gofundme.com/f/3jgk2c-martinez-family

  • The Datu & Paduganao families are three siblings who lost their homes in Manville due to Hurricane Ida’s remnants. Mheryll Padugana and her family have to rebuild their two-story home after it suffered massive flood damage. Mheryll’s sister, brother, and nephew; Charmy, Christian, and Ricky Datu all lived together in a first-floor apartment that was completely flooded. They had to be rescued and are now without cars and a roof over their heads. Insurance policies will not cover damage costs or a new place to live. The fundraiser organizer is their younger sister Marianne Datu who writes: “Although lots of material things were lost, Ida took more than just belongings. It caused irrevocable damage to my family’s lives. They are living in fear this may happen again, the stress of homelessness and of course, the traumatic experience of going through such a disaster.”

  • Kendall White and Saverio Macaro are expecting their baby boy on September 16th while recovering from Hurricane Ida’s damage in Manville. Their home’s entire first floor and garage are completely flooded. The couple has flood insurance, but are faced with a deductible of $15,000.

To make it easier for people who want to support those affected in the northeast, GoFundMe launched a centralized hub to identify all verified fundraisers related to Hurricane Ida. The hub is regularly updated as new fundraisers are verified by the Trust & Safety team and houses many fundraisers supporting the community: gofundme.com/c/act/hurricane-ida-fundraisers/northeast

Additionally, GoFundMe.org continues to direct donors to the Hurricane Relief Fund, an ongoing fund that supports urgent and long-term relief efforts for hurricane victims across the US. This includes efforts like erecting temporary shelters, distributing food and water, providing medical care, and more.  You can find that fundraiser here: gofundme.com/f/HurricaneRelief-Fund

When all is said and done, what matters to us most is that the GoFundMe community is protected and those who need help get the help they deserve. Our platform is backed by the GoFundMe Guarantee, which means that in the rare case that GoFundMe, law enforcement or a user finds campaigns are misused, donors are fully protected: www.gofundme.com/guarantee.

In the wake of the storm, there are many families who need support, and through GoFundMe they are able to safely receive help from the community as they move forward.
