Make the Road New Jersey Condemns the Death of Edwin Lopez Cornejo at the Hands of ICE, Reiterates Call to Free Them All

In less than eight months, three people have died because of inhumane conditions at Delaney Hall — including denying access to basic medical care.

NEW JERSEY — In response to Edwin Lopez-Cornejo’s death at the hands of ICE agents at Delaney Hall, Nedia Morsy, Director of Make the Road New Jersey shared the following statement on behalf of the organization’s thousands of members:

“The tragic death of Edwin Lopez-Cornejo is another grim reminder that ICE has no regard for human life. These are agents of death, aided and abetted by private prison contractors who profit from human suffering.

“Many trapped inside Delaney Hall with chronic health conditions are being denied basic medical care. People are left to die while ICE gets billions of taxpayer dollars to bring violence to our communities and GEO Group profits.

“We echo Edwin’s family’s call for justice and transparency, and we reject ICE’s lies about Edwin’s treatment. The whole world knows the truth about the horrible conditions inside Delaney Hall as a result of the hundreds of people who went on a hunger and labor strike in protest.

“Delaney Hall must be shut down immediately and all the people must be freed, beginning with those who are most medically vulnerable. We must abolish ICE. And the state of New Jersey must sever ties with these agents of death, beginning with divesting all state funds from Palantir Technologies, which aggregates local, state, and federal data from both private and public sources for ICE agents to use to inform and conduct violent and deadly raids.
