Governor Sherrill Statement on Detainee Death at Delaney Hall |
|
"I am deeply disturbed to hear of a detainee death inside Delaney Hall this weekend. My heart is with the individual's loved ones, who deserve answers about what happened. "My administration is working with our Congressional delegation to gather all the facts surrounding this death. At the same time, we continue to face obstruction in our efforts to conduct a full health inspection of the facility. Every effort to block oversight raises serious questions about what is happening inside Delaney Hall and what those operating the facility are trying to hide. "This tragedy is another painful reminder of why Delaney Hall should be closed. "I have long opposed the use of private, for-profit prisons operating in a space that should be reserved for government. Corporations should not have the right to monetize imprisoning people while avoiding public accountability. This is why we are fighting to close Delaney Hall, and why we will continue using every tool available to stop new private detention facilities--like the proposed facility in Roxbury--from opening their doors. "We will continue fighting for transparency, for justice, and for every legal tool available to protect the rights of those I being held in the facility. We will not stop until the people of New Jersey get the answers they deserve." |
