GOP Leaders Weigh-in on Primary for Somerset County Sheriff; Denounce Pino Mailer

After all provisional and votes by mail were tallied, North Plainfield Police Chief Bill Parenti defeated former K-9 officer Tim Pino by 238 votes in the GOP Primary for Somerset County Sheriff, according to Somerset County Clerk Steve Peter.

March 20, 2019 – Republican leaders from Somerset County and across the state released statements today distancing themselves from a mailer sent by County Sheriff candidate Tim Pino to Republican County Committee Members this week:

“Chief Parenti is an outstanding law enforcement official. He has the qualifications and experience to continue the good work of Sheriff Provenzano improving the safety and health of Somerset County. I fully support Chief Parenti as the next Somerset County Sheriff,” said GOP Senate Leader Tom Kean, Jr.

“I have known Chief Parenti for a number of years, and he is a first class law enforcement official and will no doubt make a great Somerset County Sherrif,” said Republican Assembly Leader Jon Bramnick.

“I encourage both candidates to run on their merits and on their records – and, in doing so, take great care not to mislead County Committee Members about endorsements,” said Senator Kip Bateman.

“The mailer in question is purposely misleading and deceitful,” said former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli.  “Because Somerset County Republicans have always had a very fair and open process, including our upcoming county convention, at which I’ll be casting my vote, campaigns of this nature and this kind of mailer are unacceptable.”

“I know both candidates well and Chief Parenti is by far and away the best choice for Sheriff,” said Provenzano.  “Frankly, I found the mailer to be deceptive and dishonest.  There is no doubt in my mind that it was intended to mislead voters in advance of the Convention.”
