Gottheimer Calls for Passage of Bipartisan Bill to Stop Corrupt Iranian Oligarchs and Entities
WASHINGTON – Today, Wednesday, June 26, 2019, on the heels of new sanctions imposed on Iran’s Supreme Leader and his affiliates by the United States, U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) called on Congress to pass the bipartisan Stop Corrupt Iranian Oligarchs and Entities Act, which directs the Department of the Treasury, in consultation with the Department of State and Director of National Intelligence (DNI), to identify and compile a list of Iranian oligarchs and entities that are ultimately profiting off the Iranian people.
Gottheimer, a member of the House Financial Services Committee’s Subcommittee on National Security, is the lead cosponsor of H.R. 1441 – the Stop Corrupt Iranian Oligarchs and Entities Act, which he introduced with Congressman David Kustoff (TN-8).
“Iran must cease its reckless and aggressive conduct, which has only increased tensions and further destabilized the region. In addition to being the world’s leading state sponsor of global terrorism, Iran continues to enrich corrupt, regime-connected officials back at home,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05). “Congress can send a strong message to Iran by passing this bipartisan legislation to shed light on the Khamenei regime’s corruption, distortion, and mismanagement of Iran’s economy.”
H.R. 1441 determines Iranian oligarchs and foreign political figures according to their closeness to the Iranian regime and their net worth.
