Governor Christie And NJ Devils To Host Students As Part Of ReachNJ Anti-Opioid Education Campaign

Trenton, NJ – Governor Chris Christie, Education Commissioner Kimberley Harrington, and the New Jersey Devils professional hockey team will talk to 150 students 4:30 p.m. Friday, December 15 at the Prudential Center in Newark to stress the dangers of using illegal drugs or misusing prescription medications.

Governor Christie will be joined by Devils President, Hugh Weber, and former New Jersey Devils defenseman, Ken Daneyko, who won three Stanley Cup Championships with the team.

Governor Christie has made it a priority to educate students to prevent drug abuse before it starts. The New Jersey Department of Education this month issued opioid curriculum resources, developed in collaboration with state and local agencies, and community stakeholders. Governor Christie directed the Education Commissioner to develop an anti-opioid curriculum for school students as part of Executive Order No. 219.

The event also kicks off a partnership between ReachNJ and the New Jersey Devils in which the Devils will highlight ReachNJ during games, part of the state’s multi-pronged effort to combat opioid addiction.
ReachNJ, a campaign to promote access to treatment and services for those impacted by substance use disorder, was launched in January. Those with a drug problem or who may know someone with the disease of addiction, may visit www.reachnj.gov or call the state’s 24-hour a day, seven days a week helpline at 1-844-REACHNJ.
