PATERSON – On Friday, November 2, Mayor Andre Sayegh, Governor Phil Murphy, Rep. Bill Pascrell and other state, county, and local leaders launched the next phase of Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park improvements – the Quarry Lawn at the site of the former Allied Textile Printing (ATP) industrial complex.
“This project ensures that the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park continues to develop into the high-value natural resource that residents and tourists deserve,” noted Mayor Andre Sayegh. “As the birthplace of the first industrial city in the United States, this area is where Alexander Hamilton set the stage for our city’s rich history. I look forward to hosting community events on the Quarry Lawn, setting the stage for Paterson’s future.”
“Enhancing the natural beauty of Paterson Great Falls, and celebrating the rich history of our state and the Passaic River through the Quarry Great Lawn, is a significant achievement for this region,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “I applaud Congressman Pascrell, Mayor Sayegh, and everyone involved for their hard work to make the Quarry Great Lawn and the Great Falls Improvement Project a reality.”
“We worked hard to secure for this project, the third largest federal investment in 2016 through the Centennial Challenge program – and we got it,” said Rep. Pascrell. “With more than $2 million in federal funds combined with state and county support, we can start filling in details to Alexander Hamilton’s story. I look forward to working with Mayor Sayegh and Governor Murphy on the next steps of this project here at the Great Falls.”
The ATP site is located within the boundary of the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park and is listed on the federal, state and municipal registers of historic places. It consists of over forty structures, including an array of ruins of historically significant 18th and 19th century brownstone and brick industrial buildings, built for use in the production and manufacture of various textile and industrial products, which evolved throughout the site’s history. The Quarry area is contiguous with the boundary of Overlook Park, stretching to near where the Colt Gun Mill stands. The southern boundary is a brownstone rock face and the northern boundary is the Passaic River, defined by what city officials call the “River Wall.”
The overall project scope of the Quarry Lawn project consists of 1) stabilization of the threatened River Wall for at least the length of the Quarry area and possibly more 2) establishment of the River Walk along and on top of the River Wall within the Quarry area 3) establishment of a “great lawn” across the Quarry area for passive recreation and event space.
The City of Paterson announced the request for proposals for engineering and architectural professional services for the project at Friday’s event, and will be advertising the request throughout the week of November 5, 2018.
