Hillsborough Democrats Encourage Residents to Review the Budget
Introduced Budget Includes $2.8 Million Increase in Revenue Raised by Taxation.
The Hillsborough Democratic Organization urges residents to thoroughly examine the 2025 Township Budget, which was introduced at the April 22nd Committee Meeting. The proposed budget includes an increase in tax revenue of $2.8 million, as well as a tax rate hike. The budget is slated for adoption at the May 27th Township Committee meeting.
Michele Kidd, Chair of the Hillsborough Democratic Organization, said, “The public had no input in the development of this budget up to its introduction. This budget affects every taxpayer's finances and should reflect the community's values and priorities. Being excluded from its formulation is unacceptable.”
The proposed budget and presentation by the temporary Chief Financial Officer are accessible on the Township website https://hillsboroughnj.portal.civicclerk.com/event/1089/files/agenda/8455 .
“Every resident should understand how each tax dollar is allocated,” continued Kidd. “They have the right to ask questions and expect comprehensive responses.”
In response to Committeewoman Samantha Hand's call for a separate public hearing on the budget, the mayor instead said that budget-related questions can be emailed to Township Clerk Sarah Brake at sbrake@hillsboroughnj.gov.
Additionally, residents may attend the May 13th Township Committee meeting. However, the budget will not be on the agenda, and comments or questions on non-agenda items are limited to three minutes and generally do not allow for extensive discussion.
The May 27th meeting offers the only thorough question-and-answer session, as the budget adoption is on the agenda.
Kidd concluded, “Taxpayers are encouraged to review the documents, attend the meetings, and use all opportunities to express their opinions and concerns and have their questions addressed.”
