The Flow Initiative: Hoboken Girl Hosts Local Period Product Drive Oct 10-30th
HOBOKEN, N.J. — HobokenGirl.com, the Hudson County media site centered on all things Hoboken and Jersey City, is hosting a local period product drive from October 10th to the 30th.
To both raise awareness for and combat period poverty, Hoboken Girl is collaborating with the Flow Initiative to help people get access to the period products they need locally — collecting new period products for those in need.
The Flow Initiative Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to protect all menstruators from a lack of access to period products while erasing the stigma, shame, and humiliation associated with period poverty. In Hudson County, 28% of surveyed local students reported missing school because they could not afford or had no access to period products.
Period poverty is defined by the American Medical Women’s Association as the inadequate access to menstrual hygiene tools and education, including but not limited to sanitary products, washing facilities, and waste management. This organization came about as a result of Eiko La Boria, the founder, learning how people in other countries are educated on menstruation and the fact that nationally and internationally, many do not have access to period products — a term called period poverty.
Period products also happen to be the least donated items to Hudson County shelters. Eiko told us, “Recently, we distributed period products on Martin Luther King Drive in Jersey City where we asked one simple question to all the people who took a package, ‘Have you ever missed school, work, or not been able to leave the house to run errands because you could not afford or had no access to period products,’” Eiko shared. “One hundred percent of them said ‘Yes.’”
With the help of The Flow Initiative and Hoboken Girl, our neighbors experiencing period poverty will receive what they need through this period product drive.

About HobokenGirl.com
Hoboken Girl was started by Jennifer Casson Tripucka in an effort to discover all of the amazing local lifestyle, events, and people that Hudson County has to offer. It has grown into a lifestyle website and brand focusing on Hoboken and Jersey City with over 20 contributors and monthly community events — all of which add to the diverse and exciting Hudson County Gold Coast. To help, Hoboken Girl has created a volunteering program called “Hoboken Girl Helps” for Hudson County residents to give back to their community. Monthly, the site hosts volunteer event opportunities for our readers at local non-profits and organizations in need in Hudson County. It’s Hoboken Girl’s hope that we can introduce new places in need of volunteers, encourage active community engagement, and facilitate volunteering opportunities for local residents.
