Hugin: South Jersey Deserves Better Than Senator Menendez
MILLVILLE, NJ — Bob Hugin joined Cumberland County officials and candidates today outside the long-shuttered Wheaton Industries glass manufacturing plant to underscore the need for more economic investment and jobs in South Jersey — a region of New Jersey ignored by Senator Bob Menendez.
“While the national economy is booming and unemployment is at an historic low of 3.7 percent, South Jersey is still reeling from the impacts of failing industries and shuttered businesses. In Cumberland County, where unemployment is at 6.6 percent and the highest in New Jersey, it is time for local, state and federal leaders to work together to bring more investment and more jobs to the region. South Jersey cannot afford another six years of Bob Menendez. For the future of the children and families in this region, we need change — and I am committed to bringing that change,” said U.S. Senate candidate Bob Hugin.
Hugin was joined by Downe Township Mayor Robert Campbell, Hopewell Township Committeeman Greg Facemyer and Cumberland County GOP Chairman Michael Testa as he launched his remarks in front of the historic Wheaton Industries glass manufacturing plant. It was one of many glass manufacturers that had provided a huge source of employment for generations in South Jersey since the 1700s.
“South Jersey has been woefully underserved by Senator Menendez in Washington,” said Facemyer. “We need leaders in the Senate like Bob Hugin who understand how to create jobs and ensure our local businesses can continue to grow.”
“Senator Menendez has ignored South Jersey for years and, as a result, our local economy has suffered,” said Testa. “We’ve had enough of a corrupt, self-serving Senator who has utterly failed South Jersey. It’s time to elect Bob Hugin, a Marine veteran and job creator who will be a fighter for South Jersey. It truly is time to send in a Marine to clean up the Menendez Mess”
Wheaton Industries had operated locally and globally for about 125 years and the Millville plant continuously employed hundreds of workers after it opened in 1925. More recently, it operated as the Gerresheimer Glass plant before shutting down in 2015.
South Jersey has had a history of large employers and industries either closing operations or moving out of state, and the region has failed to fully realize new economic investments despite recent improvements in the national economy. At the same time that New Jersey is becoming increasingly unaffordable, median income for households in Cumberland County have stalled.
“The median income in New Jersey is almost $74,000 and, nationally, it is more than $53,000. But in Cumberland County, the median household income falls below $50,000. We have to do better for South Jersey and all of the state,” said Hugin.
Bob Hugin, a Marine Corps Veteran and business leader who has created thousands of New Jersey jobs, is running for U.S. Senate against incumbent Senator Bob Menendez. For more information visit bobhugin.com.
