Immigrant Rights Advocates Denounce President Trump Declaration of a Fake National Emergency and Congress Passing Bill That Increases Funding For the Border Wall And Anti-Immigrant Policies

Trump’s declaration of a national emergency in order to fund his border wall is undemocratic and does not respond to the real humanitarian crisis of children that continue to be separated from their families

February 15th, 2019– In response to President Trump’s expected declaration of a National Emergency and Congress passing the appropriations bill that increases funding towards border militarization, Johanna Calle, director of the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice released the following statement:

“President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency is undemocratic as he attempts to redirect money from other agencies in order to bypass Congress to build his wall.  This “emergency” is merely an attempt at pandering to his supporters while continuing to demonize and dehumanize migrants and immigrants. The real emergency is the international human rights crisis of children and families being separated and detained for seeking asylum in the United States. This horrific policy was put in place by this administration and Congress and President Trump have yet to address it.

“The appropriations bill is a bad deal for Americans. It will lead to more family separations, ICE detentions, and deportations, with increases in funding for border militarization and ICE and CBP, agencies that carry out the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant policies. The bill compromises too much on America’s values of welcoming immigrants and increase funding to the agencies that violate due process and carry out Trump’s hateful policies.

“We call on New Jersey’s congressional delegation to act to put a check on Trump’s use of the National Emergency and cut funding going towards border militarization and ICE and CBP. The humanity of our communities is not up for negotiation and the responsibility is on Congress to ensure we stop funding hate now.”
