Jennise Sarmiento Joins Jim McGreevey’s Ticket for Mayor of Jersey City

Mayoral candidate Jim McGreevey welcomed Jennise Sarmiento to his team today as a prospective At-Large Councilwoman for Jersey City. Sarmiento serves as a Sheriff's Officer Detective with the Hudson County Sheriff's Office. She is a widely respected leader in Jersey City’s civic and cultural life.

Born and raised in Jersey City, Sarmiento has dedicated her life to serving the public. She has worked in law enforcement for over 7 years as a detective and active leader in community policing. Her service includes coordinating safety at community events, conducting background investigations, and delivering in-house officer training. Sarmiento holds certifications in Mental Health First Aid, Active Shooter Preparedness, and Hazardous Materials awareness.

Sarmiento serves as President of the Young Women of Excellence Mentoring Program and Vice President of the Jersey City Puerto Rican Arts & Culture organization. Through these platforms, she has mentored hundreds of young women, hosted cultural festivals and events, and expanded access to programs that uplift Jersey City’s youth. “As a proud Latina, I recognize my parents' contributions and hard work in raising a family in Jersey City. My commitment is to work hard to ensure that the next generation of children have the same opportunities I did,” Sarmiento stated.

She continued, “I seek to serve as a Councilwoman because I want Jersey City to be even better. I remember Jersey City when I was young, where children played safely outside, neighbors and local business owners cared for one another, and our streets were clean. I remember the joy of visiting arcade shops and walking to school with a sense of safety.”

Her campaign is centered on five priorities: tackling the cost of living and housing affordability; strengthening public safety through community-based policing; uplifting our youth and improving educational opportunities; investing in mental health crisis response; and restoring pride in clean, well-maintained neighborhoods.

Sarmiento stated, “While Jersey City has experienced significant investment, we have challenges, including affordability, the importance of improving our schools and providing recreational opportunities, and the necessity for safe and clean streets.”

“My faith in God guides me, and my love for my son drives me. I want children to experience the same sense of belonging and community I enjoyed growing up in Jersey City,” Sarmiento continued.

Jim McGreevey stated, “Jennise Sarmiento is a dedicated public servant. As a law enforcement officer, cultural leader, and community mentor, she has earned the respect of neighbors across Jersey City. As a daughter of this City, Jennise knows it is essential to make City Hall work for our families, listen to the concerns of our neighbors, collaborate with local businesses, and work for effective solutions to everyday challenges.”

Sarmiento is the final member to join Jim McGreevey’s slate, joined by Brandi Warren for Ward A, Efrain Orleans for Ward B, Rich Boggiano for Ward C, Catherine Healy for Ward D, Ryan Baylock for Ward E, Gloria Walton for Ward F, and Meredith Burns and Israel Nieves for At-Large positions.
