Jersey City Councilmembers Oppose Hudson County’s Renewal of ICE Detention Contract
Five Councilmembers Call on Hudson County Freeholders to Honor their Promise to End the Contract
JERSEY CITY, NJ – Today, five Jersey City Councilmembers– Council President Joyce Watterman, Councilmember at-Large Rolando Lavarro, Ward B Councilmember Mira Prinz-Arey, Ward D Councilmember Yousef Saleh, and Ward E Councilmember James Solomon–called on the Hudson County Freeholders to reject the renewal of their detention contract with ICE.
Jointly, the councilmembers wrote: “We believe that Hudson County should honor their 2018 commitment to exit the contract with ICE. As representatives in the nation’s most diverse city, we must do all in our power to end ICE’s system of immigrant detention that has led to so many abuses. Our County representatives made a promise to exit this contract by the end of 2020, and we expect them to live by their word.”
