Jersey City Police Department Continues Historic Growth as Additional Officers are Sworn in, Increasing Strategic Deployments and Crime Reduction Efforts
Latest Graduating Class Comprised of Mostly Minorities, Highlighting City’s Diversity Recruitment Efforts
JERSEY CITY – Mayor Steven M. Fulop and Public Safety Director James Shea continue to expand the Jersey City Police Department as an additional nine recruits take the oath of office during today’s swearing in ceremony inside City Hall Council Chambers at 10 a.m. The recruits are from a variety of backgrounds and ethnicities, with nearly 70-percent of the new class representing minority populations that make this diverse City so unique. The new officers will play a key role in the City’s overall commitment to enhancing public safety and expanding police presence citywide.
“As we continue to hire more officers, we will not only be reaching our goal of increasing police presence, but also progressing towards creating even stronger relationships between officers and the community,” said Mayor Fulop. “We will continue to invest heavily in resources to keep the public safe, until crime in our City is at zero.”
This administration has now hired a total of 466 police officers, with another class scheduled to enter the police academy next month. That’s more than any administration in decades. The newest recruits will bring the total number of Jersey City Police Officers to over 900 sworn officers. The City continues its efforts towards recruiting a diverse police department, ensuring that the JCPD accurately reflects the most diverse City in the nation.
“As we expand physical resources like the CCTV program and the public safety headquarters, we also know investment into the police department is a crucial component in combating crime,” said Director Shea. “As the department grows, we are able to step up patrols and continue to see crime decrease citywide. These new recruits will help us continue to meet this goal.”
The added officers will aid efforts to increase police presence and walking patrols, community outreach, crime deterrence, diversity recruitment, among other crime fighting initiatives.
