Jersey City Reopens Waitlist for Affordable Housing Options at Mill Creek Gardens
JERSEY CITY – Mayor Steven M. Fulop, alongside the Jersey City Housing Authority (JCHA) and The Michaels Organization, have announced the reopening of the waitlist for two-bedroom low-income housing tax credit apartments at Mill Creek Gardens.
“As Jersey City continues to expand, it is a priority that we ensure that all working families have an affordable, safe place to call home,” said Mayor Steven Fulop. “As we reopen the waiting list for these two-bedroom units, we continue to pursue new opportunities that will increase the amount of affordable housing available.”
Mill Creek Gardens, a 126-mixed income low-rise apartment building in Jersey City, opened earlier this spring. Of the 126 units, Mill Creek Gardens offers 121 new, modern affordable housing units to working families on the site of the former Montgomery Gardens Public Housing Apartment Complex.
“Mill Creek is a new affordable option for low-income families in Jersey City and we’re excited to be able to reopen the waiting list for two-bedroom units,” said Vivian Brady-Phillips, Executive Director of the JCHA. “We continue to focus on delivering quality housing options that offer Jersey City families welcoming communities that they can not only call home, but that they can also afford.”
Pre-applications are available from September 9, 2019 and remain open until December 20, 2019. Anyone interested in applying may visit 547 Montgomery Street, Jersey City, NJ, 07302, for a pre-application.
The rent for the two-bedroom low-income housing tax-credit unit will be $1,145 per month. The residents of apartments developed through the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program pay rent that is based on the Area Median Income (AMI). Under federal guidelines governing Hudson County, the maximum gross income limit for one person is $38,520, two people is $44,040, three people is $49,560 and four people is $55,020. Vouchers are welcomed.
The Mill Creek project was funded in part by $2.5 million from the Jersey City Housing Authority and another $2 million from the Jersey City Affordable Housing Trust Fund.
Another recent effort this administration has made to enhance affordable housing throughout Jersey City includes the creation of the Division of Affordable Housing. The Division will be housed in the new City offices along Martin Luther King Drive, within the Jackson Square complex. The goal is to combine all applicable City resources under one roof to streamline the process of finding affordable housing into a one-stop-shop experience for residents.
The Division will cover a variety of areas including: fair rents; maintain affordable housing stock inventory; compliance for developers and adherence to abatement guidelines; maintain list of applicants with update notifications; develop resource guide and become the one stop location for all information related to affordable housing.
