Joint Statement from Senator Wimberly, Assemblymembers Abdelaziz and Stewart on Transitional Aid to the City of Paterson

Paterson, NJ - Today, Senator Benjie Wimberly and Assemblymen Al Abdelaziz and Kenyatta Stewart (all D-Bergen, Passaic) made the following statement on the amount Paterson will be receiving in transitional aid:

“We are grateful to Governor Mikie Sherrill and DCA Commissioner Jacquelyn Suarez for approving $76.2 million in transitional aid for the City of Paterson. This critical investment provides much-needed fiscal relief and helps protect Paterson residents from what could have been a significant increase in local property taxes.

“Furthermore, Paterson would have faced extraordinarily difficult budget decisions, including the potential loss of police officers, firefighters, Department of Public Works employees, and other dedicated public servants who provide essential services to the people of Paterson every day.

“We thank Governor Sherrill and Commissioner Suarez for recognizing the fiscal challenges facing Paterson and for collaborating with us to help preserve critical municipal services during this difficult period.

“While this transitional aid provides important short-term stability, it also provides an opportunity to continue working toward long-term fiscal sustainability. Transitional aid is designed to help municipalities navigate financial challenges, but lasting stability requires thoughtful planning and responsible financial management.

“As Paterson's legislative delegation, we remain committed to advocating in Trenton for the resources, investments, and policies our residents deserve. We will continue working to secure funding that strengthens public safety, supports infrastructure, expands economic opportunity, and improves the quality of life for the residents of Paterson.

“We remain committed to ensuring our community has the support and resources it needs to meet today's challenges and build a stronger future.”
