Karabinchak Issues Statement Responding to Extension of NJ’s Property Tax Grace Period to June 1st

(EDISON) – Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak (D-Middlesex) issued the following statement in response to Governor Murphy signing Executive Order No. 130 yesterday, which allows municipalities to extend the grace period for property tax payments due May 1st to June 1st:

“I am pleased to see that Governor Murphy is taking action to assist New Jersey property owners. The COVID-19 pandemic has put tremendous financial stress on thousands of homeowners and small business owners across the State, particularly when it comes to their ability to pay property taxes.

“This measure will ease the financial burden for homeowners by allowing them to put their family’s basic necessities first. The measure will also support numerous small businesses struggling to generate enough revenue due to the current economic restrictions. This will be the first of many steps in addressing the financial challenges property owners continue to face as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Earlier this month, Assemblyman Karabinchak introduced A3944, which would have required municipalities to delay property tax payments until July 15th, consistent with the revised State and Federal income tax filing date.
