Lagana, Reynolds-Jackson to Announce Legislation to Expand the NJ Earned Income Tax Credit

Trenton – Senator Joseph Lagana and Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson will hold a press conference to announce the introduction of legislation to expand the New Jersey earned income tax credit (EITC). The legislators will be joined by New Jersey Policy Perspective, New Jersey Citizen Action and United Way of Northern New Jersey.

The press conference will be held Thursday, November 14, at 3:30 P.M. in Committee Room 7 in the Statehouse Annex in Trenton.

The first piece of legislation, S-4213/A-5833, would expand the eligibility under the New Jersey EITC program to allow taxpayers 18 years or older to qualify.

The second piece of legislation, S-4214/A-5837, would increase the benefit amounts under the New Jersey EITC program from 40 percent to 50 percent.

The earned income tax credit is a federal benefit for working people with low to moderate income. The EITC reduces the amount of tax a filer owes and may give them a refund. To qualify for the EITC, you must earn income from working for someone or from your own business or farm, and have a qualifying income level. Income level requirements vary based on filer status.
