LUPE Action Establishes Initiative to Educate and Mobilize Latinas Voters to
Engage in the Policy-Making Process
Califon, N.J. – December 21, 2020 – As the Latino community continues to grow and is establishing itself as the largest minority voting bloc, one group of influential Latinas in New Jersey will continue to galvanize the Latino community through advocacy and political empowerment. LUPE Action has been established by Latinas United for Political Empowerment, Inc. (LUPE, Inc) to engage and advocate for policies that advance the economic, educational and political empowerment of Latinas through issue advocacy, voter education and mobilization.
The organization’s goal is to directly engage voters and educate them about the issues and candidates that advance the economic and social welfare of Latinas and their families. The activities LUPE Action engages in to encourage Latino voter participation will complement the efforts of its sister organization, LUPE PAC, which works to elect Latinas to office.
LUPE Action also launched a new website LUPEAction.org where supporters can subscribe to become a #LUPEActionVoter through the site’s voter mobilization platform. This will allow LUPE Action to directly communicate with, engage with, and empower voters on issues of importance to them and their families.
As a 501 C (4) organization, LUPE Action advocates for the rights of Latinas to have seats at the governmental and political tables where decisions are being made. Latinas deserve to have a larger part in developing and enacting policies that encourage economic opportunity, equity and inclusion across our state. Such representation has always been rightfully called for, but the COVID-19 pandemic that has disproportionately impacted Latino families only exacerbated this need.
Fair political representation is critical in the need to advance policy solutions directly benefiting Latino families. In 2020, LUPE Action began participation in the efforts to secure a complete Census count and push for a fair and open approach to New Jersey’s legislative redistricting process. The organization remains in strong and vocal support of a redistricting process that creates opportunities for more women and communities of color to have fair political representation as guaranteed under the National Voting Rights Act.
LUPE Action is led by a Board of Directors. The Executive Committee consists of: Dr. Patricia Campos-Medina, President; Carol Cuadrado, First Vice-President; Nohemi Soria-Perez, Second Vice-President; Andrea Orbe-Martinez, Treasurer; Milly Camacho, Recording Secretary; and Zulima Farber, President Emeritus. General Board Members are: Griselle Camacho, Flora Castillo, Sonia Delgado, Lizette Delgado, Monica De Los Rios, Rosa Farias, Aida Figueroa Epifanio, Lucia Gomez, Kay LiCausi, Laura Matos, Analilia Mejia, Carmen Mendiola, Cristina Pinzon, Arlene Quinones-Perez and Noemi Velazquez.
