Lisa Mandelblatt Slams Newly Released GOP Tax Plan

New Jersey families will see their state and local income tax deduction vanish with new plan

WESTFIELD, NJ – Today, House Speaker Paul Ryan unveiled the Republican’s plan for overhauling the federal tax structure. As expected, the plan will hurt many of the families that live in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District by scrapping the deduction for state and local income taxes and capping the property tax deduction at $10,000, while lowering the tax burdens of large corporations.  The plan also lowers taxes for the wealthy by raising the threshold for the highest 39% tax bracket from the current $470,000 a year per household to $1,000,000 a year per household.

Lisa Mandelblatt, candidate for Congress in the 7th Congressional District, reiterated her opposition to the proposed plan.

“Many of our neighbors will be hit hard by these plans. Local teachers, cops, firefighters, nurses, all of whom are often struggling to make ends meet, will get kicked aside, again, in favor of corporate interests.”

Mandelblatt stressed that the elimination of state and local income taxes will hurt local families the most.

“New Jerseyans already pay some of the highest local taxes in the nation, while getting very little in return from our federal government. Anyone who represents New Jersey in Congress should be fighting tooth and nail against these plans. I know that I definitely would if I were representing our communities in Washington.”

Since announcing her candidacy in May, Lisa Mandelblatt’s campaign has focused on investing in quality jobs for New Jerseyans, addressing vital infrastructure needs, ensuring New Jersey maintains a top-notch education system for all students and fighting for affordable healthcare.
