Lonegan: Menendez Violated New Jersey Gun Laws
Congressional Candidate Pursuing Criminal Complaints with Essex County Prosecutor
Hackensack, N.J. – 5th District Republican candidate, Mayor Steve Lonegan, says Senator Bob Menendez violated to New Jersey gun laws at a press event held on March 5, 2018 on the campus of the Essex County Police Academy in Cedar Grove.
During the press conference, in which Menendez was calling for even more gun control, the senator is seen wielding an AR-15 rifle. By picking up the firearm, Menendez ran afoul of two New Jersey statutes, 2C:39-5 and 2C:58-3 (Read more here).
“I intend to file a criminal complaint against Senator Bob Menendez,” said Lonegan. “Next week, I will be going to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office to do just that.”
“The case law on this is clear. There are no exceptions — none. If you do not have the proper identification and licensing and you pick up a firearm you have violated the law.
“These are the laws that Senator Menendez and the anti-Second Amendment Left tell us are common sense gun control measures. Yet, they are the very laws that ensnare citizens in the state of New Jersey every day, subjecting them to fines, prosecution and legal costs.
“Bob Menendez is not above the law, and we are going to pursue this action with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. Bob Menendez must be held to the same standard that every other New Jersey citizen is held to. These are the gun control laws he supports; now he needs to live by them.”
