Lonegan Questions Gottheimer’s Commitment to Tax Relief
“No Leverage and even more Broken Promises to his Name”

HACKENSACK – Steve Lonegan, Republican candidate for New Jersey’s Fifth Congressional District, issued the following statement in response to Rep. Josh Gottheimer’s continued opposition to tax relief for New Jersey’s working families:

“As a candidate, Josh Gottheimer promised that he would cut the tax burden of working New Jerseyans and create jobs. But when given the opportunity, Congressman Gottheimer, who endorsed a governor calling for $1.3 billion in new state taxes, turned his back on New Jersey and voted against the tax reform process.

“New Jersey’s Democrat leadership openly said Congress’ tax relief bill will force them to ‘hit the pause button’ on new state taxes. While the legislation is not perfect, it has not even been finalized for a final congressional vote.

“Instead of moving the tax reform process forward, Gottheimer let his constituents down by walking away and losing his seat at the negotiating table before the final vote. Now, he is nothing more than a complaining outsider looking in, with no leverage and even more broken promises to his name.

“Policy should always come before partisanship. Josh Gottheimer prioritized being a good Democrat over getting something done that will jump start the economy and create jobs.

“If elected to Congress, no one will ever question my unwavering commitment to bringing tax relief and economic opportunity to working New Jerseyans. The Fifth District deserves better.”
