LUPE PAC CALLS FOR DRIVERS’ LICENSES FOR IMMIGRANTS

TRENTON, NJ – June 20, 2019 — Our next door neighbor, New York State, took a bold, courageous step this week becoming the 13th state to grant drivers’ licenses to undocumented immigrants. Here in New Jersey, LUPE PAC has been advocating for this right for more than a decade. We have supported the half dozen bills introduced in previous years, but none have passed. Drivers’ licenses for undocumented immigrants is the most important issue facing the immigrant community. This common sense legislation would allow undocumented immigrants the ability to perform everyday activities – driving to work or taking their children to school – while increasing the number of licensed and insured drivers. Such legislation creates safer roads, reduces insurance premiums, and increases revenue to the state. “The Latino community is the second largest ethnic group in New Jersey, constituting 20 percent of the state’s population and 15 percent of the electorate,” said Laura Matos, LUPE PAC’s President. “Nearly one million are registered voters. We are a powerful voice here, and our members actively contribute to our community.  We urge our state’s elected leaders to take immediate action on this and to stand up for our immigrant brothers and sisters.”
