Marques-Aquil Lewis, former President of the Newark Board of Education, has officially entered the race for Essex County Commissioner At-Large.

Surrounded by a packed room of supporters from across Essex County, Lewis made his formal campaign announcement, signaling what he describes as “a continuation of my service to the community that I love.”
His campaign has already secured key endorsements, including Ras Baraka, Council President C. Lawrence Crump, Central Ward Democratic Chair Andre Speight, and Bloomfield Board of Education President Kasey Dudley, along with a coalition of respected educators and community leaders.
Lewis’ journey in public service began as a student activist at Arts High School, where he graduated.
At just 21 years old, Lewis became the youngest elected member of the Newark Board of Education. During his tenure, he played a key role in lowering the school dropout rate by focusing on improving attendance. He later helped lead the effort to restore local control of Newark’s school system and was instrumental in the hiring of the first superintendent under local control. Lewis served on the board for nine years.
After leaving the board, he joined the Newark Parking Authority, becoming the first commissioner who had previously worked for the agency. He served for six years and one year as Chairman.
In addition to his public service roles, Lewis currently serves as Vice President of Newark Central Ward Pop Warner and head coach of a 12U championship team. He has also serves as Chief of Staff for the City of Newark’s Department of Recreation, Cultural Affairs and Senior Services.
“This is a continuation of my service to the community that I love. Essex County will elect New Energy with Experience when voting for me,” Lewis stated.
