Matthew Dickson Candidate Statement for Re-Election to the Newton Town Council

Dedicated to Our Community: Action, Progress, and Service

I have had the privilege of serving on the Town Council for the last eight years. Over these two terms, I have grown an even deeper appreciation for Newton and its unparalleled community. I am seeking re-election to continue serving this town and making Newton an even better place to live, work, and raise your family.

In my day job, I’m a paramedic, and I care about my patients. Ensuring they receive the best treatment while in my care in order to set them up for the best possible outcome is my top priority. Likewise, I care deeply about the people who call Newton home, and I want to do all I can to support them. My commitment to resourcefulness, practical problem-solving, and service to others guides every decision I make on the Town Council.

Looking Ahead: My Top Priorities for a Third Term

1. Driving Strategic Infrastructure & Continuing Key Projects

We have made tremendous strides in modernizing our town’s infrastructure while safeguarding our municipal budget.Major water and sewer infrastructure improvements—such as essential utility bond investments and pump station upgrades—have already produced meaningful results. Most notably, we secured an anticipated $24 million in principal forgiveness, covering over 77% of the cost of our major infrastructure projects so the heavy financial lifting doesn't fall on local residents.

In addition, initiatives like the Newton Homelessness Task Force have successfully created a compassionate, effective framework to support vulnerable residents—a model so successful that we believe others Sussex County could adopt it in their own communities. In a third term, I will ensure these vital initiatives maintain momentum, alongside key local projects such as the revitalization of the former Newton Armory property and the Memory Park Boardwalk connection.

2. Easing the Taxpayer's Burden Through Innovation & Partnership

Managing municipal challenges requires fiscal responsibility and creative thinking. To keep local government efficient without compromising quality, I am committed to finding non-traditional ways to cut costs:

Higher Education Partnerships: We are collaborating closely with Sussex County Community College (SCCC) to connect students seeking hands-on public service experience with municipal projects, getting real work done for Newton without the added expense of hiring outside contractors.

Aggressive Grant Procurement: We continue to stretch tax dollars further by securing competitive grants, from NJDOT road improvement grants on key thoroughfares like Paterson Avenue to law enforcement technology and safety grants.

Community Energy Planning: By adopting forward-thinking initiatives like Newton's Community Energy Plan, we are building long-term operational savings into municipal facilities.

3. Unwavering Support for Our Emergency Services & First Responders

As a paramedic, I know firsthand how vital dependable public safety services are when seconds count. Supporting our first responders—both career personnel and dedicated volunteers—is essential for a safe community. We have recently seen major wins, including the completion of crucial facility upgrades at Firehouse No. 1 and equipment grants for modern communications and safety technology. In a third term, I will continue advocating for the resources, modern equipment, and training our police, fire, and EMS personnel need to protect Newton efficiently and safely.

Experience You Can Count On

Eight years on the Town Council have given me valuable experience navigating complex municipal budget challenges, managing public resources, and collaborating with fellow council members and town staff to deliver tangible results.

Whether delivering emergency medical care or representing you at Town Hall, my focus remains the same: putting people first, listening to our residents, and delivering practical solutions. I ask for your vote so we can continue this progress together.

Thank you for your trust and continued support.
