Newark, NJ – July 11, 2022 — Mayor Ras J. Baraka, the City’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, and Questioning (LGBTQ) Advisory and Concerns Commission, and other dignitaries will hold an LGBTQ Pride Flag-Raising Ceremony as part of Newark’s Gay Pride Week today, Monday, July 11, at 6 p.m. in the City Hall First Floor Rotunda, at 920 Broad Street.
The City of Newark created its first-ever LGBTQ Commission 10 years ago. This year marks the 17th anniversary of Newark Gay Pride Week. It celebrates the accomplishments and progress of Newark and the global community regarding LGBTQIA+ advancement and inclusion. The rainbow flag, a universal symbol of LGBTQIA+ pride and inclusion, will fly outside City Hall for the duration of the week. For the first time ever, the exterior of City Hall will also be lit in rainbow colors as a sign of solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community as they anticipate a renewed fight to maintain federal protections for same-sex marriage and the right to privacy.
After the flag-raising, there will be a reception at Nico Kitchen + Bar at NJPAC to further kick off Newark Pride Week events.
All municipal agencies, local businesses, and residents are encouraged to observe Newark Pride Week and to attend the Legacy of Liberation March on Sunday, July 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., which will begin at Lincoln Park and conclude at Chambers Plaza at NJPAC.
