Statement by Mayor Ras J. Baraka

“The people of New Jersey deserve statewide leadership that is courageous, innovative, and honest about protecting the rights of all citizens. In selecting Sheila Oliver as his running mate, Phil Murphy has demonstrated his commitment to transparent and open dialogue with all of New Jersey’s residents. Assemblywoman Oliver will bring to the job of Lieutenant Governor a wealth of experience, a keen intellect and a thorough knowledge of public policy. As Speaker of the Assembly, she demonstrated her independence and capacity for leadership. Sheila has never forgotten her roots as a child of Newark. Throughout her political career, she has been an effective and outspoken advocate for the cities of New Jersey and for social, economic and racial justice. Everybody who knows Sheila knows that she is the perfect complement to Governor Murphy and will be a full partner in leading our state.”
