Mayoral Candidate Jesal Amin Suggests His Own Citizens Stimulus Package In Lieu of Governor Murphy’s Discrimination Against East Brunswick

For Immediate Release

East Brunswick, NJ- East Brunswick Mayoral Candidate Jesal Amin released the following statement regarding East Brunswick being left off the New Jersey Redevelopment Authority (NJRA) list of 64 eligible municipalities for the Small Business Lease Emergency Assistance Grant Program. Per Governor’s announcement, only eligible municipalities can apply for grants of up to $10,000 for lease costs.

“Governor Murphy who frequently talks about science and data, owes the residents of East Brunswick an explanation as to why the state does not value East Brunswick businesses enough to include them in the small business grant program that other neighboring towns including such as New Brunswick, Old Bridge, Woodbridge, and Perth Amboy are receiving. As an East Brunswick resident, I am deeply agonized at Governor Murphy’s negligence and Mayor Cohen’s continued inaction in reducing my town to a complete déclassé.” Stated Amin. “Equally stunning but not surprising is Mayor Cohen’s customary stoic silence on this issue. Doctor-Mayor Cohen as usual continues to sit on his hands and do nothing about the injustice meted out to East Brunswick’s residents. Being left off the NJRA grant list hurts East Brunswick financially even more, given that it directly disadvantages East Brunswick businesses compared to neighboring municipalities such as Old Bridge. From having the highest property taxes in the nation, to raising taxes $14 billion, to not paying out unemployment claims, to raising the Turnpike tolls, Trenton Democrats continue to fail New Jersey and East Brunswick residents.”

“To counter Mayor Cohen’s refusal to put East Brunswick and its businesses above his own partisan interests, I am organizing East Brunswick Stimulus Week the week of August 3. During East Brunswick Stimulus Week, township residents should pledge to only patronize East Brunswick businesses including ordering at local restaurants, buying from local groceries and using services of any open local businesses. This would serve as an indigenous way to make up for the failure of Dr.-Mayor Cohen, the township council and our representatives in Trenton to advocate for East Brunswick businesses and get us the aid they desperately need. Since Mayor Cohen failed miserably in keeping East Brunswick financially healthy, the onus is on us, the residents, to come to the rescue of our own township.” Continued Amin.

“East Brunswick businesses are the lifeblood of our community and the backbone of our economy. When our businesses succeed, tax revenues increase, and more jobs become available. They also help reduce taxes by taking burden away from the residents. In this unprecedented crisis, our businesses have stood by us and offered the critical services we need. Now it is our chance to stand by our businesses and support East Brunswick to continue to thrive. I firmly stand by all small and large businesses in East Brunswick and invite them to setup businesses in our town. This also aids in revitalizing the currently stalled redevelopment.” Stated Amin. EB should have strong leadership, sustainable businesses, reliable redevelopment and affordability to lead and move EB forward.
