Mayoral Candidate Jesal Amin Vows to Preserve the Character of East Brunswick

For Immediate Release

East Brunswick, NJ– East Brunswick Mayoral candidate Jesal Amin released the following addendum to his previously released 4-point plan on redevelopment in East Brunswick.

Amin is calling for a renegotiation of the township’s COAH requirement with the state which requires the construction of over 300 affordable housing units by 2025. Amin is also calling for an end to the standard of making affordable housing units only 20% of a high-density apartment complex, which in East Brunswick’s case would necessitate the construction of over 1,500 apartment units to satisfy the COAH mandate.

“While I was not born in East Brunswick, and did not grow up here, like many of this town’s residents I chose to live here and raise my family here because of our blue-ribbon public schools, which Mayor Cohen seems committed to overcrowd, and its safety and quiet demeanor, while still being in close proximity to transportation and jobs. If I wanted to live the big city, I could have, but I chose East Brunswick and now Doctor-Mayor Cohen wants to undue my choice and the choice of many East Brunswick residents by “fundamentally changing” our town.” Stated Amin. “People are fleeing New York and other cities for the suburbs because they want a better quality of life. They realize that high density urban living is bad for the environment and leads to high disease infection rates. Instead of high-density housing units that overcrowd our schools and make traffic even more unbearable, I propose a moratorium on new residential construction until we study and upgrade our infrastructure and update our master plan.”

“Doctor-Mayor Cohen attempts to use COAH as a justification for his redevelopment scheme are disingenuous as the township’s COAH requirement is only a small fraction of the high-density housing the Mayor wants to bring to East Brunswick. That said, as Mayor I would fight this requirement, because East Brunswick would be better off if it was more affordable for all, not just select few, and as a businessman I believe I could get a better deal. Moreover, as demand rises for suburban living goes up do to an exodus of residents from cities, property values will increase as well. The Mayor’s high-density housing plan will cause a decrease in property values, hurting East Brunswick residents.”
