The Freeholder fight unites more than it delights.

Merkt Elected to New Hampshire State Republican Committee

Former New Jersey Assemblyman Richard A. Merkt has been elected to serve as a member of the New Hampshire State Republican Committee.  Merkt, who moved to New Hampshire last year following his retirement as Mendham Borough Administrator, is continuing a political career that dates back to the mid-1970’s, when he first became active in New Jersey politics.  Over the course of four decades, he served as deputy attorney general, bureau chief, legislator, mayor, member of the Mendham Township Committee, and municipal administrator.

“It is an honor for me to be elected to the New Hampshire State Republican Committee,” said Merkt, who added, “This is a wonderful opportunity for me to serve in a political role in my new home state, and I look forward to working with other committee members to promote the success of the GOP in the Granite State.”

Merkt, 69, noted that he is happy to be able to return to an active role in politics, after standing down during his three years as Mendham Borough Administrator.

“Public service has long been an important part of my life,” commented Merkt.  “I am delighted that my retirement as administrator permits me now to return to the world of politics.  Sitting as an observer on the sidelines has never suited me.”

Merkt and his wife Suzanne, who lived in the Brookside section of Mendham Township for 30 years, now reside in Westmoreland, New Hampshire.  They have three grown daughters and three grandchildren.
