Mikie Sherrill: The GOP tax bill raises taxes on the families of New Jersey

Early Saturday morning, the Senate Republicans pushed through an unvetted tax plan. Democratic candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th congressional district Mikie Sherrill responded with the following statement:

The Republican tax plan will hike taxes on the middle class here in New Jersey and across the country. This plan forces middle-class families of New Jersey to pay higher taxes, adds more than a trillion dollars to the deficit, and will result in 13 million people losing their healthcare coverage. The passage of the Senate GOP tax bill is exactly the type of behavior from Washington that Americans have come to expect–a broken process where our Representatives pass sweeping legislation without our say, no matter the consequences. Had Congressman Rodney Frelinghuysen stood up for our district during the vote on the budget bill that kicked off this process, our families wouldn’t be paying the price.”

The Joint Committee on Taxation reported on November 29th that the Senate version of the tax bill will add more than $1 trillion dollars to the deficit. The Congressional Budget Office estimates approximately 13 million fewer Americans will be covered by health insurance if the Senate GOP tax plan becomes law. In New Jersey’s 11th congressional district, more than half of taxpayers use the state and local tax deduction to lower their federal tax burden.
