On Monday June 4, the Poor People’s Campaign will launch a week of actions for health and against ecological devastation.

Thousands from across the country will again converge on their state capitals, including right here in Trenton, to uplift critical policy demands including an immediate ban on fracking and offshore drilling, a pathway to universal health care, and clean water and clean energy for all.

Not only does this represent an important opportunity for bold climate action, it’s a unique moment to unite our movements and build collective power behind shared values.

The Poor People’s Campaign is uniting people across race, ethnicity, class and creed to speak up for the 140 million people living in poverty in the US. It is advancing a broad range of key progressive struggles including federal and state living wage laws, a path to universal single-payer healthcare, and equitable access to clean water and clean energy for all. Uniting people around the shared values of dignity, justice and equality is essential to the urgent task of building a broad based movement for climate justice, and one reason why I believe the Poor People’s Campaign is so important.

Despite the growing urgency for climate action, campaigns for 100% clean energy and a ban on toxic fracking waste have encountered fierce opposition from our New Jersey Legislature. Elected officials from both sides of the aisle are siding with the profits of big oil and gas over a livable climate future.  And with over a dozen major oil and gas pipelines and fossil fuel infrastructure projects currently proposed in New Jersey, now is the time to unite our fights for a safe and livable future.

Fusing our movements together is foundational to building the kind of people power we so urgently need in this moment.

Make no mistake, this work will not be easy. The 1% has long fought to keep us from realizing the beloved community that Dr. King and movement leaders envisioned more than 50 years ago.

The Poor People’s Campaign is a powerful framework, one that I believe can support a new fusion politics rooted in solidarity and shared values. Thousands of people are hard at work building the world we need.

In this moment of great challenges and uncertainty, history shows that we are stronger together.

Join us June 4th in Trenton.
