MUOIO BECOMES JUST SECOND WOMAN IN NEW JERSEY HISTORY
TO BE CONFIRMED AS STATE TREASURER
TRENTON – Governor Murphy’s nomination for State Treasurer – Elizabeth Maher Muoio – became just the second woman in New Jersey history to be confirmed to the cabinet post after receiving official confirmation from the State Senate on Thursday.
“I’m honored that the Governor has placed his faith in me and that the legislative branch has concurred,” said Muoio. “I look forward to continuing the stewardship of our state’s finances in an honest and forthright manner. As I’ve stated this week during budget hearings, the fiscal challenges we inherited have placed severe constraints on our finances that will require many tough choices. The Governor’s budget is a bold one that sets a new trajectory for our state and I stand ready to work with stakeholders to chart this new course.”
Muoio was sworn in as Acting Treasurer on January 16 when the new administration took over and has since overseen the introduction of the Governor’s proposed $37.4 billion spending plan, addressed lawmakers in both houses during the start of budget proceedings, and ordered the refinancing of tobacco bonds to save taxpayers roughly $160 million.
Underscoring Gov. Murphy’s commitment to diversified leadership, she has assembled a senior staff team in the Treasurer’s Office headed up primarily by women with extensive government and private sector expertise in budgeting and finance.
Prior to becoming Treasurer, Muoio, an attorney, had served as a member of the General Assembly, representing the 15th Legislative District in Mercer and Hunterdon counties since February of 2015. She had also been the Director of the Mercer County Office of Economic Development and Sustainability from 2008 to January 2018.
Muoio received her JD from Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and her BA from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. She lives with her family in Pennington, NJ and has a long history of community and civic involvement.
