Mural by Hamilton Students Raising Awareness for Human Rights, Educational Equality in Iran Unveiled at Local Business

Recently, Hamilton Mayor Kelly Yaede joined with Hamilton students, members of the Hamilton Township Public School District and representatives of the Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of Hamilton Township to help unveil a new mural on the side of a local business.

Students from Hamilton West and Steinert High School worked with muralist Edward Williams to create the artwork that was inspired by Williams’ research into the “Education is Not a Crime” campaign, which seeks to raise awareness about the persecution of Baha’is in Iran (who are banned from teaching and studying in Iranian universities because of their religious beliefs), as well as through inspiration from Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

The mural sits on the side of the Joseph Steinert and Company (an authorized dealer of STIHL outdoor products) building in between Arena and Olden Avenues, which is the site of the former Wonder (Bread) / Hostess Bakery Thriftshop.

“Not only did the local students and artist create a beautiful mural for residents and visitors to enjoy, but they are raising awareness about human rights injustices in Iran based upon religious intolerance,” says Mayor Kelly Yaede.  “It certainly is a reminder how we, as Americans, are fortunate to live in a country that protects freedom and religious liberties.”
