Network Statement on Veto of Emergency Assistance Bill

TRENTON – Today, Governor Phil Murphy issued a veto on legislation that would overturn the current lifetime cap on Emergency Assistance (EA) benefits for the homeless to allow the State to provide assistance for up to 18 months within any seven-year period. On the governor’s veto, Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey (the Network) President and CEO Staci Berger issued the following statement:

“The governor’s veto is heartbreaking and unconscionable. It’s baffling that the governor would cut off this lifeline for the small number of people who need temporary help the most. These are NJ residents who are already the most vulnerable and cannot be employed. We’re extremely disappointed the governor did not sign this bill which had overwhelming bipartisan support. This is not about politics, it’s about policy and compassion for our neighbors in need. During the coldest days of the year, we are urging the legislature and the governor to find a solution immediately.”
