New Democrat Coalition Endorses Rep. Sherrill’s Legislation to Establish Commission Addressing Domestic Extremism
Washington, DC — Yesterday, the New Democrat Coalition (NDC) officially endorsed a slate of legislation seeking to address the January 6th insurrection and prevent future acts of domestic terrorism, including legislation introduced by Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) and others that would establish a commission to examine domestic extremism.
The Commission on Domestic Terrorism Act of 2021 would create an independent, bipartisan commission and be modeled after the 9/11 Commission. By broadening the investigation beyond the January 6 attack, the commission will be able to conduct a more robust investigation and provide better-informed recommendations to ensure the government is fully equipped to counter and prevent acts of domestic terrorism.
“The New Democrat Coalition endorsement of our legislation to establish an independent commission examining domestic extremism is a crucial show of support,” said Rep. Sherrill. “This is not a topic that we can shy away from or move on from without confronting and addressing the real impact it has had on our country. The issue of domestic extremism continues to rear its ugly head in our communities and right here on Capitol Hill. This commission would provide us the opportunity to account for what happened, what led up to it, and what we need to do in order to heal and move forward as a nation.”
“January 6th was one of the darkest days in American history. An armed rebellion assaulted the physical embodiment of American democracy, the United States Capitol,” said NDC Chair Suzan DelBene (WA-01). “We can never forget the events of that day or the heroic actions of the U.S. Capitol Police, who risked their lives to defend the Capitol and all who work there. The New Democrat Coalition is committed to pushing these bills forward to honor the brave men and women who defended American democracy, condemn the acts of violence that were committed, and better prepare our country for future threats of domestic terrorism.”
“Following the devastating attack on the U.S. Capitol in January, our New Democrat Coalition members are devoted to honoring the lives lost and preventing such a horrific event from ever happening again,” said NDC Vice Chair of Policy Scott Peters (CA-52). “The bills we endorsed today recognize the American heroes of January 6th, denounce the hateful violence committed against our country’s sacred institutions and traditions, and will ensure we are ready to confront similar terroristic assaults moving forward. We will never forget what happened that day and pledge to do everything we can to defend America’s democracy.”
The New Democrat Coalition is comprised of 94 forward-thinking Democrats who are committed to pro-economic growth, pro-innovation, and fiscally responsible policies.
