“NEW JERSEY FOR A BETTER FUTURE” LAUNCHES TO HIGHLIGHT TOM MACARTHUR’S VOTES AGAINST NEW JERSEY’S WORKING FAMILIES

Campaign will spend seven figures exposing MacArthur’s record of voting against health care and his support of the TrumpTax

Cherry Hill – Today, on the 8th anniversary of the signing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), advocates launched “New Jersey for a Better Future,” a new campaign to educate the constituents of the 3rd Congressional District on Rep. Tom MacArthur’s record on health care and the GOP tax bill. Last year, MacArthur was one of only two New Jersey members of Congress to vote for the American Health Care Act, which would have repealed the ACA. Congressman MacArthur was also the sole member of New Jersey’s delegation to vote for the GOP tax plan.

“Tom MacArthur voted to put the lives of millions of Americans at risk,” said Ann Vardeman, Program Director of New Jersey Citizen Action. “He voted to abandon those with pre-existing conditions, slash Medicaid funding, and shift health care costs onto families in order to give massive tax cuts to millionaires, billionaires, and corporations. Tom MacArthur does not represent New Jersey’s working families or New Jersey values and his constituents deserve to know that.”

Advocates announced the new campaign on the ACA’s anniversary to highlight MacArthur’s role in attempts to sabotage the law that provides health care coverage and protections to millions of Americans. MacArthur was instrumental in the passage of the American Health Care Act (AHCA) in the House, and in fact, an amendment resurrecting the bill was called the MacArthur Amendment. The AHCA would have robbed 469,500 New Jerseyans of their health care, including 29,800 in his own district, and allowed insurers to discriminate against the 307,000 of his constituents with preexisting conditions

The New Jersey for a Better Future advisory committee includes:

  • Seth Hahn of CWA NJ
  • Amanda Devecka-Rinear of New Jersey Organizing Project
  • Bruce Davis of the NJ NAACP
  • Ann Vardeman of New Jersey Citizen Action
  • Dan Preston of Telequest Inc. – Small Business Owner

“No matter how hard he tries to fool the public, Tom MacArthur is no moderate,” said Seth Hahn, Political Director of CWA NJ.  “MacArthur single-handedly revived health care repeal, making health insurance more difficult to afford for thousands of people in his district.  He was New Jersey’s only Congressional member to vote for Trump’s tax cuts for the most wealthy individuals and corporations. At every turn, Congressman MacArthur puts his political ambitions and Trump’s priorities ahead of his constituents. We look forward to a robust conversation with residents of Burlington and Ocean Counties about the real MacArthur record that is hurting New Jersey’s families.”
