[Trenton] — Today, Governor Phil Murphy and New Jersey Democratic State Committee Chairman John Currie praised Assemblyman Jerry Green (D-22), the chairman of the Union County Democratic Committee, who announced yesterday that he is stepping down from his volunteer party position for medical reasons.

“Jerry Green is a good friend, a great advocate for Union County, and a terrific leader in our party. Under his leadership, the Union County Democratic Party continued to grow and reach into communities no one ever thought could turn blue – and flipped them,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “His advice and support were critical to me as I sought the governorship, and I will continue to look to him in the times to come. Tammy and I wish him the very best as he focuses on his health.”

Chairman Currie echoed the Governor’s sentiment, adding “I have known Jerry for many many years and consider him a close and trusted ally. He is a true champion of Union County, and his efforts in such an important suburban county have significantly advanced the interests of his community and the state at-large. His accomplishments are legendary. I know how dedicated Chairman Green is, and I can’t imagine that he came to this decision easily. But he deserves to put himself first for a change, and let others lead the charge.”

As local news reports indicate, Green, who was first elected to the chairmanship in June of 2013, invested his energies in rebuilding the county party to great success, winning all countywide elections, winning electoral contests in Scotch Plains, Garwood, Cranford, Springfield, Roselle Park, Kenilworth, Summit, Westfield, and Berkeley Heights.
