Funding to Support History Organizations, Projects, and Programs across all 21 Counties 

TRENTON, NJ – Building upon the highly successful America 250th commemoration across the state, the New Jersey Historical Commission (NJHC) board has approved $5.2 million in Fiscal Year 2027 (FY 27) grant funding benefitting 92 historical organizations, museums, historic sites, archives, libraries, individuals, and county re-grant agencies across the state.

The $5.2 million in FY 27 funding will support the New Jersey Historical Commission’s General Operating Support (GOS) program, which covers an array of operational expenses for qualified history organizations; Projects and Co-Sponsored Projects, which includes New Jersey-based historical research, exhibits, programs, and archival work; and the County History Partnership Program (CHPP), which provides all 21 counties with funding for local history groups statewide.

“The importance of this funding for New Jersey’s history community cannot be overstated,” noted Lt. Governor Dr. Dale G. Caldwell, who oversees the New Jersey Historical Commission as Secretary of State. “This State investment helps to nurture and advance important efforts to enhance understanding of New Jersey’s unique story, from the founding of the nation, to civil rights, innovation, and the diversity of histories that continue to place New Jersey at the forefront of progress. Any investment in New Jersey’s rich history ensures continued momentum of RevolutionNJ through the ongoing commemoration of the 250th and beyond.”

In Fiscal Year 2025, history organizations that received $2.9 million in General Operating Support (GOS) funding alone leveraged almost $29 million in total spending, generated nearly $35 million in total income, offered on-and-off-site programs to about 2 million people (including more than 185,000 K-12 students), enjoyed in excess of 6.1 million website visitors, and supported approximately 600 full and part-time jobs statewide.

“The need for funding support for statewide history groups has never been higher,” said Sara Cureton, executive director of the New Jersey Historical Commission. “Today’s announcement helps to meet that critical challenge, and will complement our programmatic efforts like the New Jersey Black Heritage Trail and RevolutionNJ to encourage grantees to attract new and diverse audiences, while laying the groundwork for long-term, sustained growth.”

The New Jersey Historical Commission’s grant programs are determined through an independent, third-party peer review process. All funding is made possible by a portion of the revenue produced by the state’s Hotel/Motel Tax legislation.
